Project Outline

I’d like to split my project into 3 particular areas; the first would be the 19th century and the Romanticist movement that influenced all areas of art, from architecture to visual art to theatre, the second would look at the art of Nazi Germany and what movements came up in response to it (both for and in protest of the Nazi party), and the last section would look at the aftermath of WW2 on art and what art movements came up after it in response to the German defeat and the beginnings of the Cold War.

The first section would specifically look at Caspar David Friedrich, one of the most recognizable figures in German Romantic art, Richard Wagner, a German nationalist and opera writer, and the Romanticist architecture of the Goethe house, which had it’s rooms remodeled to match the in-style Romanticist movement at the time.

The second section would look at Nazi art that was pro-Nazi, including photography and visual arts, the second section would look at the art of propaganda, like posters and films, and the last part would look at movements that were viewed by the Nazis as “degenerate,” such as Cubism and Dadaism.

The last section would, as previously stated, view how the German defeat in 1945 impacted the art world, and how the artists of the time reacted. The last part would look at movements that came up after the war in its entirety ended and possibly look at how the Cold War impacted art as well.
