Romanticizing the Past

Subject

Art Movements, Romanticism

Description

As the 19th Century began, Germany was starting to come into its own; while still separate states (with Prussia being the future unifier of Germany), German identity was starting to form. As the Enlightenment ended, Romanticism as a movement began to blossom, focusing on the beauty of the past and the natural splendor that came with it. A rejection of the new ideas of the Enlightenment and a return to "tradition" was highlighted.
