The Berlin Wall

berlinwall.jpeg

A photo of the Berlin Wall taken from the West Side. The western part is covered in bright art of various styles and colors.

Following the Potsdam Conference and Germany being split up between the USSR and the other Allied powers, Germany was irreprerably changed by the Conference. This was only compounded further by the creation of the Berlin Wall, which finished construction in August of 1961. This created a physical, emotional, and cultural barrier between East and West Berlin, and that divide is best expressed in the image here. Note the bright art and colors on the Western side; this didn't exist on the Eastern side, as graffiting the wall on that side was forbidden and could get you killed by nearby guards (keep in mind that over 100,000 people attempted to escape East Berlin, and over 600 of them would be killed by the Soviet forces occupying the city or they would be killed by their escape attempt, such as drowning or falling).
